The War Through the Eyes of a Child.

Surmounting the Immured Obstacles in Chalandon’s "The Fourth Wall"

theater; wall; massacre; destiny; Antigone; war; occupation; Sabra and Chatila; communities; memory

"Guerre" and "Londres". For a Contemporary Rereading of Céline

word formation; structuralism; cognitive grammar; Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz; letters
The aim of the article is to review selected lexical units appearing in Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz’s (henceforth also called Witkacy) letters to his wife. For the analysis of these lexemes, the methodological apparatus of traditional structural word-formation was used, but tools derived from Ronald Langacker’s (1987, 1995, 2008) cognitive grammar and the findings of other researchers remaining in this trend also became indispensable, since the structural description of neologisms and textual occasionalisms turned out to be insufficient. Only the cognitive approach made it possible to show Witkacy’s word-formation creativity, effective contextual decoding of meanings and to approximate the mechanisms of the conceptualizer’s mental perception of the world.

In Search of Panchrony: Saussure versus Cognitive Linguistics

The notion of panchrony is discussed in the context of the on-going polarization between structurally- and functionally-oriented linguistic paradigms. The two radically divergent conceptions of panchrony are thus surveyed, as envisaged by, respectively, Saussure and cognitive linguistics. As panchrony is not as yet a widely accepted research paradigm, it is suggested that while functionalists seem to be still in search of an appropriate understanding of panchrony, some lesson as to what functionally-driven panchrony should be can be derived from a critical reading of Saussure’s original proposal. It is concluded that as long as cognitive linguists hold that language is symbolic and interactive, panchrony must be attempted not in terms of linguistic universals, as for Saussure, but in terms of functional universals, such as cognitive and experiential patterns of behaviour.

demonstrative pronouns; emotional deixis; language disorder; metaphor; spatial metaphor
The paper explores how Hungarian parents of children with a language disorder use emotional deixis to report their child’s condition. Demonstrative pronouns and the metaphorical meaning
of space, particularly proximity, are observed in a corpus of six interviews. The questions raised are: a) What entities and relations are typically referenced by emotional deixis? b) What kinds of metaphorical meanings are conveyed by spatial closeness in the use of demonstrative pronouns? Results show that the parents use proximal emotional deixis differently from the usual pattern; instead of expressing their internal direct and positive experience, they employ them to report fundamentally negative experiences of the child’s condition, development, diagnosis or therapy, or other negative experiences. Such application of emotional deixis indicates an intense and vivid experience, namely mental and emotional proximity to negative experiences, which stems from the empathic parental role.

The article discusses Russian, Polish and Slovenian phraseological units containing the names of animals (zoonyms). The aim of the study is to determine to what extent the stereotyped image
of animals, fixed in phraseological units, corresponds to contemporary knowledge about the behaviour of animals. An analysis of phraseological units concerning a cow, bull, calf, ox, goat, sheep and ram is conducted. A comparison of these phraseologies with contemporary data on animal behaviour reveals a certain discrepancy between the actual intellectual and psychological capacities of animals and their image fixed in phraseological units.

polysemy; unaccusative verbs; existential structures; possessive construction; the Polish language
This paper examines the syntax and semantics of the unaccusative verb wystarczać/wystarczyć ‘to suffice’ in Polish. We argue that this verb is polysemous. Besides its idiosyncratic meaning ‘to suffice’, it may also mean ‘to be enough’ or ‘to have enough’. The three above-mentioned meanings of the verb wystarczać/wystarczyć are associated with three different syntactic structures. The idiosyncratic meaning of this verb is found with the nominative argument. The second meaning of the verb surfaces in existential clauses with the genitive DP and an optional locative PP. The third - possessive meaning - arises when the verb appears with the dative possessor and the genitive theme.

This paper addresses the issue of agency that could be traced in the performance of advanced Polish learners of EFL, students of English philology. The study presented in the paper set to investigate the students’ self-reports on learning goals, behaviours and strategies typical of their language-based practices. The students were instructed to describe and reflect on all the learning activities they were involved in in both formal and informal settings by writing their reflective learning journals throughout a week’s time. The examination of the data has provided a picture of the students’ engagement in an interplay of academic and self-directed practices, which helped them meet different goals and ultimately contributed to the improvement of their language proficiency. The students demonstrated an awareness of language learning processes and an ability to reflect on aspects of their agency, referring, among others, to their intentions and motivations in pursuing their objectives.

The Effect of Highlighting and Hiding in a Multimodal Message. A Conceptual Blending Analysis of a TV Commercial for Momester®Nasal

multimodality; conceptual blending; mode; highlighting; hiding; TV commercial
The objective of the proposed paper is twofold. Firstly, by adopting the claim that theultimate me aning of each multimodal message is more than the sum of modes used in the process of its creation, the author strives to offer a thorough analysis of the TV commercial for Momester®Nasal, using the tools as proposed in the Fauconnier and Turner Conceptual Blending Theory (2002). Secondly, assuming that a successful multimodal message “is achieved through all modes interacting both separately and simultaneously” (Pinar Sanz, 2015, p. 1), as well as pointing to the fact that multimodal approach to communication does not favour any of the modes applied in a message, but may, sometimes, highlight one of them (Winiarska & Załazińska, 2017, p. 7), the author poses a daring question to what extent the integration of distinct modes which occur in a multimodal message can be interpreted as the result of two cognitive operations, i.e. the effect of highlighting and hiding in the sense of Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The object in question is a TV commercial for Momester®Nasal where three modes: visual, linguistic and aural, are put under scrutiny. The analysis is to prove that alternate highlighting and hiding of elements belonging to three disparate modes also contributes to greater cross-resonance among the modes, which in turn strengthens the creative potential of the message (El Refaie, 2015).

This paper analyses the qualitative notes of a self-reflective researcher and examines his literature classroom experience. The researcher develops an auto-ethnographical research design to understand how spatial interaction can be experienced after the critical shift from actual settings to virtual settings. The paper elucidates the results in efficiency regarding involvement and creativity. The researcher’s recorded auto-ethnographical entries cover four weeks while teaching at a state-run department in Trabzon. He tries to transform the virtual setting into a spatial learning medium to achieve responsive interaction and creativity to enhance the participants’ critical thinking and imagination. S/he referred to the theory of postromantic education to examine the results. S/he decided to keep a diary about the classroom experience. The reflective account revealed that the use of whiteboards and particularly the integration of chatbox into virtual classrooms helped overcome social and spatial interaction drawbacks. The study concluded that the internally motivated participants oscillate between imagination and cognition thanks to the experiential apparatus of spatial interaction created by the postromantic framework.

Flipped classroom model has been an important pedagogical tool that has been widely incorporated and researched in recent years. Current studies have scrutinized the effect of the model on the achievement of language learners. The purpose of the present study is two-fold: (i) to examine whether the flipped classroom model has an impact on B1 level Turkish students attending English preparatory program at school of Foreign Languages in a state university, and (ii) to investigate if the flipped classroom model yields different results on the self-regulated learning levels of the participants. The participants of the study consist of 60 B1 level prep-class students attending B1 level Listening course, with 2 classes each including 30 students. Firstly, the students in one class were classified as control group (CG) and the ones in the other class as experimental group (EG). During the 8-week B1 module process, the listening lesson was taught with the traditional method in the CG and with the flipped classroom model (FCM) in the EG. The data were gathered through pre and post-tests of listening skills achievement exam and self-regulated learning scale. As for data analysis, mixed ANOVA analysis was used. The findings showed no significant difference on self-regulated learning levels but on listening skills achievement scores. Suggestions were discussed accordingly.

Employing a number of crucial discoveries in neuroscience and drawing from years of valuable teaching experience, I show that creative writing is the most effective and natural kind of writing to help English language learners (ELLs) develop their writing skills. Based on over 25 years of language teaching experience, I argue that creative writing helps students find their unique writing style and voice, nurtures confidence in the craft, creates a genuine relationship with the skill, and successfully articulates their feelings and thoughts to a desired audience. Core writing problems for ELLs are addressed and creative writing is suggested as a powerful solution to many of these issues. A very successful creative writing workshop developed at an American Intensive English Program is offered to illustrate how essential the various genres of creative writing are for ELLs. This creative writing program developed the ELLs’ writing skills significantly more than any of the traditional kinds of academic writing activities or assignments. In most cases, the ELLs improved 30% to 45% on their writing exit exams after completing the creative writing program. The exit exam results for the academic writing course were considerably lower when compared to the creative writing program results. The article concludes by showing how discoveries in neuroscience and cognitive psychology support the use of creative writing over other forms of writing used in Academic English Programs and Intensive English Programs.

This research article aims to show the academic achievement in the form of marks of students of the third year’s subject ‘Teaching and Learning English’ located in the Degree in Primary Education (Faculty of Education, Universidad de Murcia, Spain). Our corpus of participants has five different groups (including the bilingual group) with a total number of n=1496 students with an average per academic year of n=374 students whose marks have been analysed comparing four different academic years. Taking into account the subject programme, the performance of the students during the normal year, during the lockdown, in the blended learning yeart (face-to-face and online) and in the return-to-normal year have been analysed. The results show that in both the lockdown and the blended learning year the performance is higher than in the other academic years, which leads us to question whether the pandemic really influenced the assessment and teaching conditions of the subject.

Internet meme; metaphor; metonymy; conceptual blending; Ukraine
In relation to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, memes and Internet jokes have
aspecial status. They work as stress-relievers, information vessels, or Russian propa-
ganda resistance. The effectiveness of ameme relies on mingling verbal and visual
elements in such away that seemingly unrelated scenarios become relatable and can
be interpreted in agiven context. The text aims at discussing the cognitive mechanisms
employed in chosen pro-Ukrainian memes against the 2022 Russian invasion in terms
of their bimodal construal. An analysis of agroup of memes was conducted within the
cognitive linguistics framework, with reference to the Conceptual Metaphor Theory,
conceptual integration theory (Fauconnier & Turner, 2002), and construal (Langacker,
2008, 2019). The creation of memes triggers frameshifting and convergence of dif-
ferent mental spaces, which results in online meaning construction, where humorous
incongruity derives directly from blending and shows how jokes (about tragedies) may
become humorous, due to frame substitution.

practicum; teacher training; self-regulated learning; reflective teaching; peer observations; pre-service teaching
Teacher trainees often consider the practicum to be the most critical aspect of their pre-service training. However, its duration is frequently insufficient, necessitating teacher-trainers to explore methods of increasing the trainees’ direct teaching experience. The present study focuses on one such attempt – the establishment of a language school within a faculty – and its six-year existence. The study examines how participating teacher trainees received the project, with 30 of them taking part in a survey, which forms the basis of qualitative analysis and an overall project evaluation. Responses from the participating trainees reveal that they perceive the program as a unique and the most beneficial part of their teacher-training period. The trainees report having made significant progress, particularly in areas such as workload management, lesson-planning, utilization of materials, addressing students' needs, and general teaching fluency. The project's Director of Studies conducted observations to evaluate these areas, and the results align with the trainees' self-evaluations. The project is an innovative practicum type that encourages reflective practice and has led to changes in the ELT training carried out by the faculty.

metaphor; stand-up comedy; humor; gender; identity
This paper examines metaphorical expressions labelled under the conceptual metaphor A WOMEN IS AN OBJECT originating from 30 performances by female North American stand-up comedians. By
combining the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980/2003) and stand-up comedy research, this corpus- and the dictionary-assisted study examines how women and womanhood
are conceptualized in terms of objects such as buildings, food, houseware, or vehicles. The multilevel analysis of the expressions shows that the interplay between the subversive character
of stand-up comedy and gendered metaphors allows for reclaiming the power over stereotypical language under the guise of humour.

This study examines EFL teachers’ beliefs, practices, and the (mis)match between them in regard to the language used as a medium of grammar instruction. The participants are nine experienced female EFL secondary-stage Jordanian teachers. Data were collected through a mixed quantitative-qualitative descriptive-analytical approach. Teachers’ beliefs were investigated by a questionnaire, their practices via a classroom observation checklist, and the (mis)match between them was discussed during a focus group of teachers. The results showed that all teachers’ beliefs were matching their practices, a consistency that was attributed to contextual factors, students’ preferences, students’ language proficiency and teachers’ experiences as learners.

How to Point with Language: English Source-Based Language to Describe Taste Qualities

source-based language; taste description; metonymy; indexicality
Western languages notoriously lack specific, abstract vocabulary to describe sensory perception. Despite the paucity of specific lexical items, descriptions of sensory characteristics of food abound in English. One of the most common strategies is source-based language (e.g., creamy), which allows speakers to evaluate and communicate a current sensory experience with respect to a prototypical source of the sensation. The aim of this paper is to review the different morphosyntactic patterns used to convey source-based information to describe flavour, and to provide a taxonomy of the constructions involved. The three types of source-based language discussed are organised along a cline from more analytical (i.e., X tastes like Y), to more synthetic (i.e.,
adjectival suffixes), with a medial stage in which the source of the sensation is morphologically free, but syntactically embedded in constructions following the pattern N1 of N2 (e.g., a splash of chilli). Previous literature has accounted for this phenomenon either as motivated by conceptual metonymy, or as a case of “pointing structures”. I argue that the two different theoretical accounts need not be in stark opposition, rather they both contribute to our understanding of the figurative usage of concrete items in language. Data were retrieved online from a collection of gin Tasting Notes, created by expert tasters to evaluate the flavour profile of the liquor.

Corpus-aided instruction; learning transfer; EFL; academic writing; second language learning
The purpose of this study is to examine learning transfer in corpus-aided instruction. Fifty second language college students in writing classes participated in this study. Corpus research and qualitative research were employed to navigate the students’ learning transfer. Findings show that corpus-aided instruction has some potential to increase multilingual learners’ writing skills. This study will be of interest and value to scholars and teachers working in areas such as corpus linguistics, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), and second language writing, providing pedagogical implications for language educators and teachers. This study would also help ESL/EFL educators and teachers improve awareness of lexicogrammar along with the knowledge and information of corpus linguistics. It is hoped that language teachers and educators can build corpus literacy (i.e., the ability to use the technology of corpus linguistics for language development) to support their multilingual learners to develop 21st-century skills. Based on the preliminary findings, suggestions and implications are discussed.

The aim of this paper is to account for the semantics of selected terms of Germanic, Romance and Arabic origin with surprising origins, referred to by the editors of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as the “top ten words with remarkable origins”, which initially referred to objects, animals, places and later started to be employed figuratively in various human- and nonhuman-related contexts. The theoretical framework adopted in the research embraces such tools offered by Cognitive Linguistics as conceptual metaphor and metonymy. The paper attempts to explain the conceptual motivation behind the semantics of the targeted terms and the results of the research conducted may be said to corroborate not only the conceptual nature of metaphors/metonymies as such but also their impact on social cognition.

Metonymy-Guided Discourse Inferencing. A Qualitative Study

Cognitive-linguistic research on metonymy has argued cogently that metonymy is a crucial factor guaranteeing discourse coherence. Barcelona (forthcoming) includes a detailed study of the metonymies guiding the pragmatic inferences claimed to be invited by the reading of a brief text. The analysis of the fragment, though internally consistent, is based on my own close reading of the text. In the paper I report on a qualitative study investigating whether native speakers of English derive the same inferences and whether they are guided by metonymy in this derivation. The results seem to confirm my claims in the earlier study.

The aim of the research is to recognize the role of mental spaces in meaning construction of the nickname flądra in Polish [English: slut; literally: a flounder], received on the ground of the real discourse extracts retrieved from the Polish Corpus. The meaning of the nickname is obtained by examining the metaphors underlying it, which are motivated by various contextual factors, e.g. the speaker’s gender and discourse registers. The results obtained in the study reveal that the meaning of the flądra nickname is based on five metaphorical dynamic structures organized hierarchically, from which the mental-spaces level provides for the novel meaning of flądra.

In this paper we discuss the framing effects of the ego- vs. time-moving metaphor in relation to climate change. Previous studies have found that time-moving metaphors (e.g., climate disaster is approaching us) led participants to assess the urgency and perceived risk of climate change as higher than ego-moving metaphors (e.g., we are approaching climate disaster). Our results did not show the framing effect of metaphor, but observed individual differences in participants’ political orientation. We discuss factors that may influence framing and argue for a non-reductionist perspective of discourse or experimental studies.

literary work of art; phenomenological analysis; cognitive grammar; places of indeterminacy; grouping
Based on Langacker’s conception of grouping, the paper reformulates the basic assumptions of Ingarden’s theory of the literary work of art in terms of the Cognitive Grammar approach. The claim is made that, given a gestalt-based approach to the multi-stratal nature of the literary work as envisioned by Ingarden, the idea of grouping is a perfect methodological tool to apply in a holistic analysis as developed within cognitive poetics (sensu Stockwell). An incremental cognitive process, grouping “transcends” – in a gestalt-like fashion – all “levels” of conceptual organization. For illustrative purposes, the paper recasts Ingarden’s analysis of Mickiewicz’s “The Ackerman Steppe” in terms of Cognitive Grammar.

The article examines the multimodal metaphors which actualise the concept of CHORNOBYL in the five episodes of the miniseries Chernobyl. The procedure of the analysis includes identifying
and selecting the multimodal metaphors following the Filmic Metaphor Identification Procedure, construing and describing the structure of key and sub-metaphors with the target domain CHORNOBYL, distinguishing the modes of the domains, interpreting the meanings and attitudes that are mapped onto the target domain. The source domains DETECTIVE STORY, ESPIONAGE,
DISEASE, HOSPITAL are cued via the combination of visual, auditory (sonic and musical), and verbal (written and spoken) modes.

Cognitive Linguistics; Usage-based models; linguistic worldview; conceptual integration
Usage-based models that underlie cognitive approach to language and grammar imply investigation of language as a dynamic tool used in interpersonal communication rather than as an abstract system of signs. Hence the linguists’ interest in the language of social and mass media, with its focus upon real current situations and events. One of such events, reported by journalists and widely commented upon, was an incident that occurred in Ukraine shortly after the Russian invasion of 24 February 2022. In one of the villages in the battle zone a group of Ukrainian civilians seized a tank from the Russian army. In the internet, the news soon became a hit and was translated into several languages.
Focusing upon Polish, the analysis presented in the paper will show the relation between the form of those messages and their epistemological value. In the case study I will use the concept of the linguistic worldview combined with that of conceptual integration, thus substantiating the claim that theoretical framework offered by Cognitive Linguistics can be profitably used to describe, to optimize and to operationalize acts of linguistic communication.

The article questions the traditional application of intermedial categories to literature. It aims to show that thinking in modes and clear-cut categories suggested, among others, by Lars Elleström, though systematic and presumably universal, is limited and considerably narrows down the intermedial potential of literature and the interart exchange. The literary examples discussed: Orhan Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence and Patrick Gale’s Notes from an Exhibition, as well as other examples provided in the article, illustrate how the primacy of language in literature can be questioned and how the presumptions we have concerning literature and books can be challenged.

This paper aims to tease out multimodal and narrative affordances of an auction catalogue, adapted by Leanne Shapton for novelistic purposes in Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry. In doing so, Shapton develops a new form of realism, in which the presumed physicality of photographically represented objects appears to anchor the fictional universe in empirical reality. Hers is thus a truly hybrid project: combining verbalisation and visualisation, enumeration and narration, functionality and literariness, her book continually oscillates between the real and the fictional.

translanguaging; mediation; TILLT; language teaching; TI training
In recent years, multilingual practices like mediation and translanguaging have found their way into additional language pedagogy. This is due to the recognition that multilingual language users do not store or use their language in isolation, but rather build up a repertoire in which all languages are connected. Multilingual practices are particularly relevant for university programmes in translation and interpreting in which students are trained to work in multilingual environments in a mediating role. In this article, we will describe the professional demands that TI students have to meet and how multilingual practices can help them to develop towards these demands.

translator; responsibility; reflection; knowledge; translation error; manipulation
The point of departure is the concept of translation as a social and hermeneutic activity to facilitate understanding among people with different knowledge backgrounds. Human translation is depicted as a dynamic, mind- and body-bound process that is referred to in relevant literature as embodied, embedded, extended and enactive. The decisive role of the translator’s attitude is emphasised, including his or her awareness of a historical character of the mediated text. Within a hermeneutics-related approach to translation, several criteria for the translation analysis are postulated. Utmost caution is recommended in error-seeking evaluation of translation where a valid translation strategy might be confused with linguistic error.

metaphor; demetaphorisation; metaphorical term; term formation; translation
The focus of the present paper is the treatment of metaphorical terms in the Latvian term formation and translation practice, and the approaches to seeking Latvian equivalents for English metaphorical terms. The work undertaken in the development of bilingual dictionaries has brought to the fore the potential conflict between metaphorical terms and the strict prescriptivist rules that exist in Latvian term formation, that no ambiguity is permissible and metaphoricity should be ousted. Yet cognitive linguistics has unveiled the capacity of abstract thought and abstract reasoning in the formation of metaphorical terminology and that metaphor is at the basis of meaning formation. There are several approaches to seeking Latvian equivalents for English metaphorical terms yet in translation and interpreting practice loan translation still prevails. Over the recent years there has been evidence of a more determined return to metaphorical terms in Latvian as a significant element in the organization of the conceptual system of the language. Time will show, which trend will prevail though at present it seems that metaphorical terms in Latvian have come to stay.

translation; Latvian; Russian; German; source language; publishers; visibility
Within the period of changing occupations and ideologies shifts in the translation policies in Latvia were incredibly fast. The independence period saw a developed translation industry with a great variety of source languages, literature and quality. The soviets nationalized the publishers, ideologised the system, introduced censorship. Russian was made the main source language. After the German invasion the publishers regained their printing houses and a partial return to normality occurred. Most of the source texts now were German or Nordic - classics, travel literature and biographies. There were surprisingly few ideologically motivated translations. Most translators left for the West in 1944 when the soviet system was reinstated. The new occupation regime was even more repressive than in 1940/41. During these years Latvian translation agents adapted to the ideological dictum of the times and tried to retain their own agendas.

The aim of the article is to discuss the specifics of a multimodal pun functioning in the English source text of popular science discourse and its translation into Ukrainian. Multimodal pun is considered as a combination of two inhomogeneous elements – verbal and visual, – that is a variety of intersemiotic game/play intended for producing a humorous effect. While the leading role in a multimodal pun belongs to its verbal component, the visual one performs either a creative or an amplifying function. As a result of a case study, four strategies of reproducing multimodal pun in interlinguistic translation are outlined.

Intermediality; textile arts; paratext; embroidered illustration.
Handcrafted compositions make some editorial projects unique. Among them, book covers that use embroidered illustrations are emphasized. Book covers configure the threshold that inhabits the intermedial space between the physical materiality of the book and its content. The theoretical framework supporting this study is found in the concept of intermedial reference by Irina Rajewsky (2005), while the materiality of embroidered illustrations becomes viable as a material and sensory media modality, according to Lars Elleström's (2020) studies. The notion of paratext, in turn, is supported by Gérard Genette (1997). In summary, we seek to deepen the studies of intermediality by addressing textile materiality and its haptic capacity in editorial projects.

This paper is an attempt to describe some ways of seeing Edgar Allan Poe’s work through some of its afterlives, many of them literary but also intermedial ones – drawings, paintings, films, plays and musical pieces. Products inspired by the poem “The Raven” will be characterized as adaptation, translation, ekphrasis, transmediation, representation or else – in their new configurations: drawings , concrete poems, films, novels, paintings, charges, comic books, graphic novels, pieces of music and so on. Because Poe’s work is so extensive and appreciated – and therefore imitated – a variety of processes can be exemplified

This article considers the position of the wall in media and literary studies. It posits that the wall encompasses qualities that justify its examination as a medium. The widespread presence of the wall in fiction suggests this structure is an important, yet neglected actor in the transmission of material communication. When the wall functions as a medium, its endurance, visibility, and materiality actively influence the messages it channels. As demonstrated through a close reading of Timothy Findley’s Famous Last Words, the study of the wall represents a unique opportunity to engage in a novel approach to the study of media in fiction.

In Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem, the reader follows the protagonist Wang Miao into the digital depths of the virtual reality of Three Body. As I will demonstrate in this paper, the virtual reality Three Body constitutes a purposeful combination of literary simulation of modern physics and intermedial VR video game representation. I will show that this combination is utilized for several interesting narrative purposes, for example, as a powerful foreshadowing instrument and as an almost didactic explanatory device for the theoretical physics problem upon which the novel is based.

This critical essay aims to develop a reflection about present time and the type of art that it bequeaths to those who inhabit it. Questioning about its depth and its engagement to the relevant issues to the contemporary individual, it is suggested that an aesthetic activity concerned not only to its own time and place, but also to otherness and to the future, could be an alternative to art expressions that are mere escapes from reality. At last, José Saramago’s literature is used as a thematic study case of the propositions presented throughout the paper.

literary translation; linguistic structure in translation; metaphor

Jacek Dehnel; Ariadna Demkowska-Bohdziewicz; Jędrzej Polak; translation criticism; translation strategy
The research was inspired by Dehnel’s translator’s note on his rendering of The Great Gatsby and Kopeć-Umiastowska’s vehement criticism of this translation, based on evidence of errors. The fragments criticized are juxtaposed with the parallel sections in Polak’s neglected translation of the same novel, which demonstrates that Polak’s solutions usually conform to the critic’s expectations. However, further examination of Kopeć-Umiastowska’s argumentation identifies her criterion of error as mostly arbitrary and unfit for literary translation assessment. It is postulated to understand the error in literary translation as a departure from the original that cannot be defended with any valid translation strategy.

To study or Not to Study Online? Students’ Views on Distance Education During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Diary Study

distance education; university students; the COVID-19 pandemic; advantages; disadvantages
Distance learning is a type of instruction between a teacher and students separated by a physical distance where communication takes place through mediated information encompassing one or more technological media. In other words, the instruction participants stay in different places, yet take part in the same learning activities sequenced, paced and controlled by the teacher using new technologies to facilitate both the student-teacher and student-student rapport. The aim of the paper is to gain insight into this kind of learning from the perspective of university students. The sample constituted 128 students of the English Philology at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The findings of a diary study exploring the subjects’ reports on their attitudes towards online studying at the time of the COVID-19 period shows how students’ view change with an increasing infection rate, and, in fact, present the advantages and disadvantages of education during the pandemic, be it a face-to-face or remote mode. In conclusion, the question of whether to study or not to study online seems to be difficult to answer unequivocally. Though, some suggestions are given on how to improve distance education at times of university closure and lack of full participation in the process of building the academic community and identity that have been ascribed to the university construed as an indestructible social system for ages (Sowa, 2009).

Metaphorical Creativity in Discourse

conceptual metaphors; context; creativity; source domain; target domain
On the “standard” view of conceptual metaphors (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980; Kövecses, 2002), metaphorical creativity arises from the cognitive processes of extending, elaboration, questioning, and combining conceptual content in the source domain (Lakoff and Turner, 1989). I will propose that such cases constitute only a part of metaphorical creativity. An equally important and common set of cases is comprised by what I call “context-induced” metaphors. I will discuss five types of these: metaphors induced by 1) the immediate linguistic context itself, 2) what we know about the major entities participating in the discourse, 3) the physical setting, 4) the social setting, and 5) the immediate cultural context. Such metaphors have not been systematically investigated so far, though they seem to form a large part of our metaphorical creativity.

complementation; disjunction; finite verb; focusing; grounding; modal; negation; negotiation; proposition; speech act
Two fundamental aspects of conceptual and linguistic structure are examined in relation to one another: organization into strata, each a baseline giving rise to the next by elaboration; and the conceptions of reality implicated at successive levels of English clause structure. A clause profiles an occurrence (event or state) and grounds it by assessing its epistemic status (location vis-à-vis reality). Three levels are distinguished in which different notions of reality correlate with particular structural features. In baseline clauses, grounded by “tense”, the profiled occurrence belongs to baseline reality (the established history of occurrences). Basic clauses incorporate perspective (passive, progressive, and perfect), and since grounding includes the grammaticized modals as well as negation, basic reality is more elaborate. A basic clause expresses a proposition, comprising the grounded structure and the epistemic status specified by basic grounding. At higher strata, propositions are themselves subject to epistemic assessment, in which conceptualizers negotiate their validity; propositions accepted as valid constitute propositional reality. Propositions are assessed through interactive grounding, in the form of questioning and polarity focusing, and by complementation, in which the matrix clause indicates the status of the complement.

Eurolect; corpus linguistic tools; CQL (corpus query language); diachronic approach; EU translation; institutional-legal texts; multilingual (parallel) corpora; passive structures.
This study scrutinizes interlingual Eurolect from the perspective of the use of passive structures in the English language versions of EU institutional-legal texts while monitoring their variations in translation in the Slovak language versions. For the purpose of observing the diachronic variations in institutional translation, specific English-Slovak parallel corpora were compiled. The translational analysis draws on a text-based and corpus-driven approach while incorporating a mixed-method as a fusion of both qualitative and quantitative research in order to provide the most relevant outcome. To enable the quantitative analysis of the corpora to be accomplished precisely and time-efficiently, we employed the Sketch Engine Corpus Query Tool. The research findings reveal an increasing tendency in the use of passives in EU translation when comparing post-accession and contemporary subcorpora, suggesting a shift in English-Slovak translation practice despite institutional recommendations.

Bequeathing the Journey: "Kyoto song" by Colette Fellous

Colette Fellous; travel; Japan; memory

Secret Cuisine: Alterity and Gastronomy in Nine Moati's "Les Belles de Tunis"

The present paper aims to outline a study devoted to the implementation of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) into primary online classroom practice. The selected aspects of Anglophone cultural content were chosen to complement the students’ cultural issues covered by the core curriculum. The cultural elements were incorporated into the background of EFL materials focusing on teaching vocabulary by means of a range of activities suitable for primary school learners (42 second graders). The conclusions to be presented will provide the researchers' reflections on the implementation of and the students’ responses to the lessons.

Nancy Huston; transcultural; identity/otherness; exile; border; bilingualism; self-translation

The Writing of Otherness in the Prism of Travel Stories in Colonial Algeria (1830-1900). Mirages and Truths

This article examines and reviews two types of reduced redundancy tests, namely cloze tests and C-tests, which involve completing a text from which certain units (whole words or their parts) have been removed. Assessment instruments of this kind are typically used to measure overall language proficiency, for example for the purpose of making placement decisions. The paper also discusses the development of these two measures of reduced redundancy with the help of the WebClass testing system.

Orthoepie research is a traditional field at the department of Speech Science and Phonetics at Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg. After several pronunciation dictionaries, the department has now published a pronunciation database. With the establishment of the German pronunciation database (DAD), the desire for a publicly accessible reference source is met. It offers norm phonetic information on general vocabulary, as well as forms and rules of phonetical Germanization. The database can be used for various scenarios in German lessons. Continuous expansion means that further possible uses can be introduced in the future.

Nowadays, when face-to-face human interactions are restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students have fewer opportunities to put their oral communicative abilities to the test. Under these circumstances, technology becomes an ally of both teachers and learners. While synchronous tools enable students to communicate with one another in real time, asynchronous tools allow them, among others, to record their utterances for review and self-evaluation. This paper aims to indicate which technological solutions could help teachers increase learners’ oral production in the ESP classroom (with particular emphasis on Medical and Business English) and which ones could help students improve their speaking skills independently.

Assessing learners’ performance is crucial as it informs about learners’ achievement levels in addition to their strengths and weaknesses, not only in face-to-face but also in online teaching. The study aimed at investigating the challenges faced by language teachers in assessing learners during online teaching and to offer some suggestions regarding language assessment courses in teacher training programs. The study adopted a qualitative approach to data collection and analysis. The participants included 22 language teachers whose age was between 24 to 48. Of these teachers, 8 were male, while the rest were female. Their teaching experience varied from 2 to 25 years, with an average of 11.8 years. The data was based on the responses of the participants during semi-structured interviews. The participants were asked to attend ZOOM meetings to be held, considering their availability. The interviews lasted 10 to 25 minutes. The results of the study indicated that the challenges faced by the participants included five major themes: Assessment type, assessment item formats, support, previous training (assessment literacy), and academic integrity. Several suggestions were offered considering online testing and assessment literacy and language assessment courses in teacher training programs.

The aim of the article is to discuss the research results of the study conducted on English teachers’ negative emotions experienced during COVID-19. In order to collect the data, 30 English teachers from secondary schools were asked to keep a diary for one semester and describe situations that aroused feelings of anxiety, anger, and loneliness. The study was of a qualitative nature, and it showed that most of the emotions that the English teachers experienced were associated with the lack of support from the government and their colleagues, and also with the uncertainty about the future.

The article focuses on stories, revealing personal experiences related to the technology-mediated education caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and storytelling as a tool in qualitative research. Stories and storytelling may play an important part in qualitative research through presenting a unique, subjective view, which may contribute to the universal perspective. The transition to online teaching has been related to the pandemic, that constitutes a traumatic experience, generating further difficult experiences of an individual nature, which need to be told and shared. That is why, the research through storytelling in the context of the transition to online reality, caused by the pandemic seems to be adequate. Stories as natural phenomena to the human psyche and everyday existence may provide an interesting insight into online teaching, which might have been lost in the limitations of other research tools.

World War II; discourse analysis; collective memory; persuasive strategies; political argumentation
The article analyses two speeches commemorating the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War, delivered by the German President Frank Walter Steinmeier and the Polish President Andrzej Duda. The authors examine the two texts and ask what aspects of World War II the politicians evoke in their speeches, what images of the Self and the Other are created and what goals are pursued. In the beginning, the article outlines the different meanings of World War II in Polish and German collective memory, and then it proceeds to briefly characterise the commemorative speech as a type of speech. A special emphasis is placed on the analysis of the perspectives underlying the speeches, including the theses presented, as well as on the comparison of the most important differences.

everyday language; lexis; regional variation
