Abstract
Bulgarian football clubs, competing in the top three levels of the nationa football pyramid during the 2014/15 season. The names of 92 clubs depict various specifics of Bulgarian sports onomastics such as the strong heritage of the socialist period (1946–1989) in the country, the tendency of naming clubs in honour of historical figures from the National revival period in the middle of XIX c. and a distinct preference towards Thracian and Slavic old names of cities and regions. A very small number of clubs named after their sponsors reveals another significant distinction. The article’s basic conclusion is that the principles behind naming Bulgarian football clubs are unique, lacking in historical continuity and with an unpredictable future.
