This article analyzes contemporary European migration regimes through the 2021 Polish–Belarusian border crisis and its representation in Silent Trees. It aims to examine how migrants experience both physical border crossing and subsequent social, legal, and cultural “borders.” Focusing on the story of a teenage Kurdish girl, Runa, the article highlights the gendered and traumatic dimensions of displacement, including the phenomenon of “denied childhood,” captivity, and hostipitality. It also explores the use of animation to articulate trauma. Finally, it indicates the human cost and ethical contradictions of restrictive migration policies.

This paper questions binary opposition legal/illegal and welcome/unwelcome and examines how the graphic novels Illegal, The Unwanted: Stories of the Syrian Refugees, Home, The Power of Welcome deconstruct or reinforce these binaries and selectivity and multivalence of the border. The paper argues that this framing, rooted in a colonial legacy of 'othering,' reinforces a hierarchical worldview where borders function as both physical barriers and cultural constructs within complex bordertextures.

Using the frame of food and foodways which defines the courtship and relationship, the film delves into homophobia, sexile, and precarious migratory status. In this graphic memoir, Jacob shares the daily conversations she has with her son, which form the point of departure for the work. Situating the memoir within the socio-political climate shaped by intensified surveillance, racial profiling, and populist rhetoric, the study explores how everyday family conversations become sites where identity, fear, and belonging are continuously negotiated. The narration mostly follows Jacob’s dialogues with her young biracial son, Z, as well as with family, friends, and partners. These moments of dialogue, filled with humour, frustration, and doubt, offer insight into how racialized individuals search for belonging in a society that often excludes or misrepresents them.

The investigation suggests that, in the face of the complexity to reach out to the displaced Other because of psychological and physical trauma, a language of touch emerges to cross the self-Other threshold and open the door to the fragmented and vulnerable self. Mobilising a framework that foregrounds the role of the body in hospitable encounters, a longing for touch can be traced through the presence of a physical and symbolic hand.

Gabriela Garcia’s debut novel Of Women and Salt (2021) is a multigenerational Cuban family saga intertwining with the story of a lone Salvadoran mother and her daughter. The book’s broad setting combines four countries: El Salvador, Mexico, Cuba, the American state of Florida, and Texan borderlands. The novel offers an extensive view of Latinx immigration and articulates how leaving a homeland affects not only the migrants themselves but also the generations to follow. The article discusses the complexities of remembering, inheriting, and transmitting trauma by exploring the different experiences of Cuban refugees and Salvadoran migrants who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally. Secondly, the analysis focuses on the complex themes combining physical and sexual abuse, fractured mother-daughter relationships, drug addiction, state violence, and displacement, which produce intergenerational trauma inherited by matrilineal descendants in the Cuban family. Subsequently, the article discusses the issues of unauthorized immigration, border crossings, detention, family separation, and deportation, which function in the novel to express the Salvadoran characters’ individual trauma. However, they also represent the collective trauma of other detained migrants. The phrase “We are force” resonates through both intertwining storylines, denoting inherent strength that prevails against traumatic experiences.

This article analyses the graphic novel Walicho (2023) by Argentinian comics artist Sole Otero, as it intertwines space theory, feminist critique, and decolonial perspectives through visual storytelling. Structured as an anthology, the narrative follows three Spanish witches whose migration to Buenos Aires in the eighteenth century catalyses social and colonial transformations within Mapuche land. The work explores Buenos Aires as a colonial and postcolonial space shaped by hybrid epistemologies, drawing on indigenous cosmology, Catholic imagery, and European witchcraft. Through characters across historical periods, Walicho criticises enduring colonial, patriarchal, and capitalist structures while interrogating the possibilities and limits of feminist solidarity.

This article examines Melania Luisa Marte’s Plantains and Our Becoming (2023) as a work that challenges canonical diasporic and migrant narratives. Marte articulates a holistic and holy Afro-Dominican-York identity, dismantling dominant constructions of Blackness, nationalism, and mestizaje. Going beyond water as the prevailing diasporic metaphor, she turns to plantains and mangos to affirm a transnational yet rooted sense of self. While acknowledging structural racism, police abuse, and dehumanization, Marte moves beyond narratives of victimhood and displacement to foreground the African diaspora and community as sources of belonging, insisting on unapologetic Black joy and thriving as radical forms of resistance.

Metaphors are addressed relatively rarely in Construction Grammar approaches. After outlining previous research on conceptual metaphors within usage-based Construction Grammar, the aim is to raise awareness of the cognitive-metaphorical and metonymic motivation underlying foreign-language constructions. In connection with the development of a multilingual project database, metaphors and metonymies in German phraseme constructions are to be examined from the perspective of teaching German as a foreign language, with reference to general methodological-didactic and specific construction-didactic principles.
Metaphern werden in konstruktionsgrammatischen Ansätzen relativ selten behandelt. Nach einer Skizzierung der bisherigen Forschungen zu konzeptuellen Metaphern in der gebrauchsbasierten Konstruktionsgrammatik soll für den Erkenntnisgewinn beim Aufzeigen der kognitiv-metaphorischen und metonymischen Motivation der fremdsprachlichen Konstruktionen sensibilisiert werden. Im Zusammenhang mit der Erstellung einer mehrsprachigen Projektdatenbank sollen Metaphern und Metonymien in deutschen Phrasemkonstruktionen aus der Perspektive der Vermittlung des Deutschen als Fremdsprache unter Bezugnahme auf allgemeine methodisch-didaktische und spezielle konstruktionsdidaktische Prinzipien untersucht werden.

Although previous approaches to change communication are diverse, they have proven to be largely ineffective in corporate practice. A look at recent change studies clearly shows that one in two change initiatives fails to deliver the desired results and collapses after a short time. This highlights the urgent need for improvement in this area in order to increase the success rate of change processes. This article therefore presents new solution approaches from a linguistic perspective. It focuses on the dynamics and deep interaction between language, mindset, and communication in the context of organizational change. It demonstrates how mental models and metaphors – when used effectively – can be key drivers of organizational performance, enabling managers and employees to engage with change processes in a more sustainable and individualized way.
Die bisherigen Ansätze zur Change-Kommunikation sind zwar vielfältig, erweisen sich in der Unternehmenspraxis jedoch als nur bedingt wirksam. Ein Blick in aktuelle Change-Studien zeigt deutlich: Jeder zweite Veränderungsprozess bringt nicht die erhofften Ergebnisse und scheitert nach kurzer Zeit. Die Ergebnisse unterstreichen den Handlungsbedarf in diesem Bereich, um die Erfolgsquote von Change-Prozessen deutlich zu steigern. Dieser Beitrag bietet daher neue Lösungsansätze aus der linguistischen Perspektive. Im Fokus stehen die Dynamiken und tiefgreifenden Wechselwirkungen zwischen Sprache, Mindset und Kommunikation im Kontext organisationaler Veränderungen. Es wird aufgezeigt, wie mentale Modelle und Metaphern – richtig eingesetzt – zum Schlüssel für die Leistungsfähigkeit von Unternehmen werden können, indem sie Führungskräfte und Mitarbeitende nachhaltiger und individueller auf die Veränderungsprozesse einstimmen.

This paper studies the blending of diverse conspiracy theories (CTs) in the context of public debates in Germany about the COVID-19 pandemic, with a special focus on right-wing extremist CTs. They provide a prototypical example of metaphorical projections of fictitious resistance/war scenarios onto a conceptually alien topic (i.e. that of pandemic containment), as predicted by Danesi’s (2023) analysis of CTs. Retrospective interviews with CT believers confirm a degree of conceptual “fossilization” (Danesi) but it still remains an open question whether this is the result of neurophysiological processes, as posited by Danesi, or of socio-emotive benefits, such as emotional reassurance in identity building. In either case, mere fact-checking and/or -falsification is insufficient to prevent the CTs’ socially detrimental effects. I therefore argue that in addition to cognitive analysis, CTs have to be confronted by counter-narratives that empower the recipients to rely on their own epistemic competencies.

The discussion briefly addresses the features of linguistic worldview as well as the significance of metaphors in language. The text is scrutinised to present President Trump’s figurative language use. Such an approach attempts to identify recurrent imagery which reflects the worldview represented by the speaker. The conducted analysis aims at showing the observed salient aspects of metaphorical language use and those images that are repeatedly represented in the speech delivered during inauguration. The analysis identifies recurrent imagery and metaphorical patterns.

The study highlights that metaphors in Busse’s text not only illustrate complex issues but also serve terminological, epistemic, and model-constitutive functions. The findings demonstrate that metaphors contribute to didactic accessibility, cognitive rationalization of abstract phenomena, and the shaping of theoretical categories. The article argues for a clear distinction between metalinguistic and meta-language metaphors, emphasizing their systematic integration into linguistic theory-building and their relevance for the conceptual modelling of language and communication.
Der Beitrag untersucht die konzeptuelle Metaphorik im Kapitel „Frame-Semantik“ von Dietrich Busse (2009). Im Zentrum steht die Analyse der CONDUIT-Metapher (Reddy 1979/1993) sowie weiterer metaphorischer Muster, die nicht nur der Veranschaulichung dienen, sondern auch terminologische, epistemische und modellkonstituierende Funktionen erfüllen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Busses Darstellung durch anschauliche und bildhafte Sprache gekennzeichnet ist, wobei Metaphern zur didaktischen Vermittlung, Rationalisierung abstrakter Konzepte und zur Begründung theoretischer Kategorien beitragen. Der Artikel plädiert für eine Differenzierung zwischen metasprachlicher und metalinguistisch relevanter Metaphorik, die im Prozess sprachtheoretischer Modellbildung systematisch berücksichtigt werden sollte.

Fede Álvarez’s film Don’t Breathe (2016) and Poe’s classic tale ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ (1843) present a significant number of intertextualities, which pave the way for approaching Álvarez’s film as a contemporary adaptation of Poe’s tale. Both narratives comprise pervasive references to the gaze and the act of looking, methods of invigilation and disclosure, the house as a projection of its dweller, and the relevance that age and gender discourses acquire in them. This article offers a comparative analysis of both narratives with the view to prove that Álvarez’s film reflects and subverts the dynamics of surveillance and exposure displayed in Poe’s original tale.

Fede Álvarez’s film Don’t Breathe (2016) and Poe’s classic tale ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ (1843) present a significant number of intertextualities, which pave the way for approaching Álvarez’s film as a contemporary adaptation of Poe’s tale. Both narratives comprise pervasive references to the gaze and the act of looking, methods of invigilation and disclosure, the house as a projection of its dweller, and the relevance that age and gender discourses acquire in them. This article offers a comparative analysis of both narratives with the view to prove that Álvarez’s film reflects and subverts the dynamics of surveillance and exposure displayed in Poe’s original tale.

The paper presents a contrastive cognitive-linguistic analysis of metaphorical portrayals of inflation in Polish and American English financial discourse (2022–2024). Integrating Talmy’s (1988) force dynamics and Kövecses’s (2020) extended Conceptual Metaphor Theory, it examines corpus data from money.pl and money.com. The study traces patterns across schematic levels – from image schemas to mental spaces – highlighting how inflation is metaphorically construed. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis of collocations and metaphorical expressions, the paper identifies shared and divergent cognitive models shaped by cultural context. The findings underscore how metaphor structures economic discourse and how it reflects differing national responses to inflationary pressure.

Traditionally, television tackled challenges and problems young people have to face in a two-fold and simplistic way, focusing on either radically pejorative situations and behaviors (crime, drugs, sex) or on superficially cheerful scenarios (entertainment, gossip, having fun) (Buckingham, 2021; Hebdige, 1988). The author analyzes the reviews of two television shows, Glee and Euphoria, which – although representing different genres and narrating different experiences – are acclaimed for offering more complex and authentic representations of teenagers by addressing issues that are often marginalized, tabooized, or even absent in contemporary American television discourses.

Nnedi Okorafor’s Remote Control (2021) offers a nuanced Africanfuturist narrative in which myth, magic, and technology converge to shape a speculative vision of Ghana. This paper examines the protagonist Sankofa’s journey through the theoretical lens of the technological trickster, a hybrid figure drawn from African mythological traditions and speculative technoculture. Drawing on Faucheux and Lavender III’s concept of tricknology, the analysis reads Sankofa not merely as a mythic or symbolic figure, but as a living disruption, a technological-trickster hybrid who contests the very frameworks of race, gender, and futurity. By embodying this archetype, Sankofa navigates and challenges sociocultural expectations of gender, identity, and power. The novella reimagines traditional ideals of African femininity, particularly motherhood, domesticity, and submission, by positioning a technologically empowered Black female body at the centre of narrative agency. Through this framework, the paper explores how Okorafor mobilises tricksterism not only as a mode of resistance but also as a mechanism for projecting liberatory futures for African women. Ultimately, the novella contributes to a growing corpus of Africanfuturist fiction that interrogates colonial residues and systemic inequities while offering alternative epistemologies grounded in African cosmologies.

The following study introduces an exploration of queer narrative identity as depicted in selected characters in recently popularized Caribbean American fiction. A close examination of Xochitl Gonzalez’s Olga Dies Dreaming allows for an analysis of the challenges faced and the contested spaces traversed by queer literary characters, within a transcultural context, subsequently foregrounding a nuanced understanding of queer identity and relations of power. Through a selective reading of Gonzalez’s Olga Dies Dreaming the literary representation of queer identity is placed under an intersectional lens and examined against a backdrop of postcolonial US Caribbean communities in New York. Stereotypical representations of Latin machismo, intergenerational conflict, intense familial relationships and a closeted behavioral model regarding queerness are some of the main factors that emphasize immigrant vulnerability and affect identity negotiation.

Red Pill (2020) is a novel by British writer Hari Kunzru. The novel explores two ongoing socio-political trends. First, it is concerned with the dominance of transparency in contemporary society, a situation which is presented as totalitarian. Then, Red Pill analyses the rise of the alt-right in Western countries. Kunzru also highlights the shortcomings of common liberal-progressive responses to modern-day far-right discourse. This article examines the novel from the point of view of Critical Transparency Studies, drawing on the work of, among other, Georg Simmel and Byung-Chul Han.

By drawing readers’ attention to the uniqueness and fragility of eggs, Ova Aves is a timely reminder of the need for humankind to rethink how we relate to the nonhuman in the Anthropocene.

Set in the planned community of Shaker Heights, the novel depicts the unraveling of the seemingly perfect Richardson family following their encounter with Mia Warren, an unconventional single mother. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus and cultural capital, this paper analyzessuburban conformity as a marker of moral legitimacy and social power. In dialogue with Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, it further examines how family ideals function as fragile social constructs. Ultimately, the article argues that Ng exposes the myth of the “perfect” nuclear family as a mechanism that reproduces exclusion and systemic inequality in contemporary Americanculture.

This paper examines the relationship between the repoliticisation of Spanish fiction after 15-M and metamodernism. Metamodernism has been linked to post-truth and the rise of the far right. However, the emergence of this structure of feeling was caused by various crises that exposed late capitalism’s failure. The connection between metamodernism and Spanish fiction will be explored to show metamodernism’s potential for the critical examination of neoliberalism. This merger will also contribute to a broader understanding of the repoliticisation of Spanish fiction and its aesthetic strategies. Particularly, the invoking of reality and materiality will be examined as a metamodern feature that is often displayed by recent Spanish novels for political, emancipatory purposes.

Transvestite Poetry] (2014a); "Manifiesto horrorista" [Horrorist Manifesto] (2014b); "Enferma del alma" [Sick at Heart] (2015); and "Para no morir tan sola. Escritura en pandemia" [So as not to Die so Alone. Writing in a Pandemic ] (2022). Rather than centring its plot on the legal matters of the case, San Martín’s proposal concentrates on the worldview of one of the daughters, Sara, a 12-year-old girl who becomes tacitly aware of being different to the "norm" because of living with her mother and her partner. But the film’s title also alludes to the family formed by Sara’s father and his new wife, which is governed by a bourgeois and corseted order. Rara is a film about free women who are, however, unprotected by the law. This study focuses on the questioning of the normative family that the film poses and attempts to respond to this condition of "weirdness" experienced by Sara, whose particular view forms the central axis of the narrative.

Further developing visual and multimodal metaphor theory requires taking into account medium, mode, and genre. The medium of film has hitherto been rather sparsely studied for its metaphorical potential. In this paper I report good examples and exciting insights from assignments and essays by students in my “Metaphor & Film” MA elective, University of Amsterdam (Autumn 2024), clustering these in issues that deserve sustained scholarly scrutiny by the next generation of (film) scholars interested in metaphor.

It was not only quoted or reused in more than 50 Hungarian online media texts between 2020 and 2021 but was also used by its author in 11 interviews and speeches. Following Siefkes’ (2013) discourse-semiotic approach, we will analyse the discursive dynamics of the metaphor in these 11 texts, how it is repeated and further developed against the background of discourse-specific text patterns.
Im Zentrum dieses Beitrags steht eine ausgewählte Metapher „Österreich ist ein Laboratorium für Ungarn”, die von dem ungarischen Ministerpräsidenten in den ungarischen Corona-Diskurs eingeführt wurde. Sie wurde zwischen 2020 und 2022 nicht nur in mehr als 50 ungarischen Online-Medientexten zitiert bzw. wiederaufgenommen, sondern auch von ihrem Urheber selbst in 11 Interviews und Reden verwendet. In Anlehnung an die diskurssemiotische Auffassung von Siefkes (2013) soll vor dem Hintergrund diskurspezifischer Textmuster analysiert werden, welche diskursive Dynamik die Metapher in diesen 11 Texten entfaltet, wie sie wiederholt und weiterentwickelt wird.

This article explores child cruelty in Condición animal [Animal Condition] by Valeria Correa Fiz as a device for dismantling the liberal humanist notion of the subject, through the lens of the ontology of precariousness (Butler) and the notion of human animality evoked in the title. The stories analysed depict violence as inherent to all material existence, including childhood – not to empower the child within the modern logic that equates violence with agency, but rather to deconstruct childhood itself and, with it, the very foundation of the modern subject. The epistemic uncertainty generated by this representation reorients subjectivity toward a corporeal and vulnerable existence, simultaneously capable of inflicting and suffering harm.

It is primarily concerned with examining which works of the French philosopher attracted the attention of Polish translators and thinkers, and what the motivations were behind their initiative to discover and expose his work to Poles. The articleshows that Polish political thought was very much inspired by the works of Montesquieu, seeking advice and many universal lessons of wisdom from them for the reform policies of the Polish state in the second half of the eighteenth century. In this way, interpreting and analysing the thoughts ofth e French philosopher had a very pragmatic political purpose during the Polish Enlightenment.

L’objectif de la présente étude est de montrer comment la pensée politique polonaise s’est inspirée de l’oeuvre de Montesquieu durant le siècle des Lumières. Il s’agit avant tout d’examiner une double question : quels ouvrages du philosophe français ont attiré une attention particulière de quelques traducteurs et penseurs polonais, et comment expliquer leur initiative, voir leur mission de les faire découvrir aux Polonais. L’étude ambitionne de montrer que la pensée sociale et politique polonaise de l’époque a cherché dans l’oeuvre de Montesquieu aussi bien de nombreux conseils pratiques que des leçons de sagesse universelles, en vue de les utiliser en faveur de la réforme de l’État polonais dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle. Ainsi, découvrir et analyserle système de pensée du philosophe français a eu, avant tout autre chose, un objectif politique pragmatique pour les écrivains éclairés polonais.
This article investigates from a feminist perspective the process of the deconstruction of archetypal representations of women in Interior F (2002) by Mariana Silva Yrigoyen. The play establishes a hypertextual dialogue with classical mythology, through the figures of Cassandra and Electra, as well as with Federico García Lorca’s Yerma (1991). Interior F not only denounces the social constructs that oppress female characters during Peru’s internal armedconflict, but also seeks to reconstruct a new social and cultural model of women by empowering its protagonists and attributing to them qualities traditionally associated with men.

This study aims to map the strategies of emancipation that some authors of the last 15 years set in motion in their works of fiction about the genocide of the Argentinean dictatorship. My intention is to delve into the aesthetic dimension of their political approaches, focusing on those creations that problematise what is thinkable, foreseeable or reasonable for the inexpressive, fragmented or untraceable bodies (Quintana, 2020) of both the disappeared and their perpetrators and relatives. I will focus here on the particular case of the novel Soy un bravo piloto de la nueva China [I am a Brave Pilot of the New China] (2011) by Ernesto Semán. The plot alternates between three settings that form a conceptual kaleidoscope in which the bodies of the characters dislocate and renegotiate temporal and spatial obviousness –resorting to elements of non-mimetic literature – to make other forms of relationship with themselves and with others possible. For this porpuse, I will focus on the representation of the bodily, affective and experiential dimension of the protagonists and on the staging of an excess that, according to Rancière, seeks to destabilise the hegemonic order of representation, proposing displacements of the collective outline by crossing different logics.

While these works appear to exhibit thematic discontinuity and ideological divergence, given that the social commitment embedded in the chronicles seems to contrast sharply with the homage paid to the last king of Poland in the author’s most recent novel, ostensibly aligned with the tradition of canonical biography—both ultimately articulate “politics of recognizability” (Butler, 2009) and a reconfiguration of the “distribution of the sensible” (Rancière, 2010). The analysed life-writing enables a critical interrogation of hierarchies and social norms as well as transformation of the hegemonic discursive order (Cros, 2002; Malcuzynski, 2006, 2009), while also probing the boundaries and possibilities of testimonial and auto/biographical literature (Anderson, 2011; Arfuch, 2002, 2018).

In this article, I will compare the concept of mediation competence, its modelling and its relationship to language competence in Translation Studies and Language Teaching. While competence modelling has a long tradition in Translation Studies and focuses on describing the competences of professional translators (often opposed to bilinguals’ competence), mediation is a relatively new concept in Language Teaching, which was put on the map in the CEFR 2001. For my analysis, I will first describe areas of interest and relevant models in each discipline and then analyse the overlaps and differences as well as areas of contention.
In diesem Artikel wird die Sprachmittlungskompetenz und ihre Modellierung sowie ihr Verhältnis zur Sprachkompetenz in der Übersetzungswissenschaft und der Sprachdidaktik verglichen. Während die Modellierung von Kompetenzen in der Übersetzungswissenschaft eine lange Tradition hat und sich auf die Beschreibung der Kompetenzen professioneller Übersetzer (oft im Gegensatz zu den Kompetenzen von Bilingualen) konzentriert, ist Mediation ein relativ neues Konzept in der Sprachdidaktik, das durch den GERS 2001 in den Fokus gerückt wurde. Für meine Analyse werde ich zunächst zentrale Fragen und relevante Modelle beider Disziplinen beschreiben und dann Überschneidungen und Unterschiede sowie kontroversielle Aspekte analysieren.

The following paper focuses on intertextual references in Austrian indictments. Firstly, the legal and linguistic functions of indictments are discussed. Next, a concise presentation of linguistic approaches to intertextuality is provided. Finally, Austrian indictments are analyzed both with regard to the fulfilment of functional and structural requirements of the Austrian Code of Criminal Procedure (paradigmatic relations) and to different forms of intertextual references to other texts (syntagmatic relations). The paper thus corresponds to one of the key areas of focus in contemporary specialized communication research.
Gegenstand dieses Beitrags sind intertextuelle Bezugnahmen in österreichischen Anklageschriften. Zuerst werden juristische und linguistische Funktionen der Textsorte Anklageschrift diskutiert. Darauf folgt eine konzise Darstellung der linguistischen Intertextualitätskonzepte. Zum Schluss werden österreichische Anklageschriften einer eingehenden, intertextuell orientierten Analyse unterzogen: zum einen im Hinblick auf die Erfüllung funktionaler und struktureller Vorgaben der österreichischen Strafprozessordnung (paradigmatische Relationen), zum anderen auf unterschiedliche Ausprägungen intertextueller Bezugnahmen auf andere Einzeltexte (syntagmatische Relationen). Damit entspricht der Beitrag einem der aktuellsten Schwerpunkte der gegenwärtigen Fachkommunikationsforschung.

This article explores family language policies among mixed couples in Poland, focusing on how family members perceive and manage their languages. Using Spolsky’s FLP Model, the authors analysed 79 language biographies from multilingual speakers based on in-depth narrative interviews conducted between 2014 and 2021. The findings revealed that although families expressed explicit language ideologies and strategies, these often did not align with their actual language practices. The analysis also indicated that the affective and social aspects of multilingualism, such as the language status resulting from the political, social, and historical situation, were crucial factors influencing family language policies.

This article examines the intertextual dynamics between Taras Shevchenko’s The Caucasus and The Dream and Alexander Pushkin’s narratives where the author justifies imperial expansion and assigns roles and identities to Russia’s multinational colonies. Through ironic references and subversive recontextualization, Shevchenko critiques the glorification of Russian imperialism based on the falsified “knowledge” about the colonized subjects and challenges Pushkin’s portrayal of Russia’s dominance in the Slavic world. The analysis highlights Shevchenko’s use of hypertextuality to deconstruct Pushkin’s vision of imperial grandeur, contrasting it with Shevchenko’s advocacy for a future grounded in Slavic equality and mutual respect.

The discussion will be illustrated with examples of terms related to wetland and to the vegetation specific for this area, extracted from the novel Where the crawdads sing (2018) by Delia Owens and its Romanian translation. The conclusions show that there are several reasons why the translator may opt for a less accurate rendering of nature terminology, including the translator’s perception of the aim of the target text, e.g. entertainment rather than information, or the translator’s (limited) knowledge of the field.

While translators have viewed the technological progress as a threat to their jobs, machine translation comes with some persistent issues, such as bias or inaccuracies stemming from insufficient context understanding and cultural nuances. Accordingly, the question of the future of human translation is more complex than it may initially appear. This paper presents the results of a pilot study on the perception of the future of the translation profession in the era of artificial intelligence.

The object of the translational considerations made within the framework of this article are the elements of the third culture, which are an indication of literary multilingualism and multiculturalism. In the example of the novel Pachinko by Min Jin Lee and its renderings in German and Polish, the influence of translational interventions on the image of the third culture among the recipients of the translations is demonstrated. The paradigm of anthropocentric translatorics as well as the scenes-and-frames-semantics serve as the theoretical-methodological foundation of the analysis presented here. The aim of this contribution is to illustrate how translators influence the image (the scene) of the elements of the third culture among the recipients of the translations through the use of explicative translation techniques.
Das Objekt der im Rahmen dieses Artikels angestellten translatorischen Erwägungen sind die Elemente der dritten Kultur, die ein Anzeichen der literarischen Mehrsprachigkeit und Mehrkulturalität darstellen. Am Beispiel des Romans Pachinko von Min Jin Lee und dessen Übersetzungen ins Deutsche und Polnische wird der Einfluss übersetzerischer Eingriffe auf das Bild der dritten Kultur unter den Adressaten des Translats dargelegt. Als die theoretisch-methodologische Grundlage der dargebotenen Analyse dient das Paradigma der anthropozentrischen Translatorik sowie die Scenes-und-Frames-Semantik. Der Beitrag zielt somit darauf ab, zu veranschaulichen, wie die Übersetzer das Bild (die Szene) der Elemente der dritten Kultur bei den Adressaten der Translate unter Verwendung von explikativen Übersetzungstechniken beeinflussen.

This article looks at tandem translation and interlinear translation as methods of translating that have become established in poetry translation in the 21st century, at least in the translation of Polish poetry into German. In any case, anthologies remain an important form of publication of Polish poetry in Germany. However, while translation anthologies were mainly published in the 20th century, the bilingual anthology now dominates and emphasises the equivalence of original and translation as well as that of author and translator.
Der Beitrag nimmt zum einen als Verfahren translatorischen Handelns das Tandem-Übersetzen und die Interlinearübersetzung in den Blick, die sich in der Lyrikübersetzung des 21. Jahrhunderts ‒ zumindest gilt dies für die Übersetzung polnischer Lyrik ins Deutsche – etabliert haben. Ziel der Betrachtungen ist es, das Interagieren von Übersetzer*innen und Lyriker*innen als Akteur*innen translatorischen Handelns sichtbar zu machen. Zum anderen wird in diesem Beitrag mit dem Publikationsformat der Anthologie, die nach wie vor eine populäre Form der Lyrikpublikation darstellt, ein Wandel von der Übersetzungsanthologie zur fast ausschließlich zweisprachigen Anthologie markiert. Im Konnex von Übersetzer*innen und Lyriker*innen sowie von Original und Übersetzung korrespondiert die anthologie mit den benannten Verfahren im Wandel translatorischen Handels von polnisch-deutscher Lyrikübersetzung im 21. Jahrhundert.

Based on a class dedicated to entrepreneurial functioning of MA students in translation, the article strives to show how polyphony can be entrenched in class content and classroom dynamics. It is argued that polyphony can empower students’ polyphonic approach to career choices. The empirical part discusses the responses from the class participants in 2023 concerning their perception of the modes of work they find most attractive. Conclusions outline areas for enhancements in class content and classroom dynamics.

This paper first traces the AI-induced automation of the digitalised and datafied language industry, with a focus on neural machine translation and large language models. Then, it discusses a range of digital literacies that have become increasingly relevant in the language industry in light of these technologies, i.e., machine translation literacy, data literacy and artificial intelligence literacy. The cultural landscape is understood as the area of human habitation and the result of human activities in a particular space. In literature, it manifests itself as an emotionally charged local landscape, as a sensually and intertextually explored travel destination or as a former historical region (as a lost cultural landscape). The article examines literary topographies and factors that influence the perception and literary representation of the cultural landscape. The existential dimension of the landscape experience is linked with spatial categories, motifs of travelling and movement in different configurations. Finally, on the basis of the contributions collected in the volume, representations of cultural landscapes in travel literature are discussed.
Die Kulturlandschaft wird als der Bereich menschlichen Wohnens und das Ergebnis menschlicher Aktivitäten in einem bestimmten Raum verstanden. In der Literatur manifestiert sie sich u. a. als emotional aufgeladene lokale Landschaft, als sinnlich und intertextuell erforschtes Reiseziel oder als ehemalige historische Region (als verlorene Kulturlandschaft). Im Artikel werden literarische Topographien und Faktoren untersucht, die die Wahrnehmung und literarische Darstellung der Kulturlandschaften beeinflussen. Die existenzielle Dimension der Landschaftserfahrung wird mit Raumkategorien, Motiven des Reisens und der Bewegung in unterschiedlichen Konfigurationen verknüpft. Auf der Grundlage der im Band versammelten Beiträge werden abschließend Repräsentationen von Kulturlandschaften in der Reiseliteratur diskutiert.

Partant de cette hypothèse, dans un premier temps, les problèmes écologiques mentionnés dans les textes en question seront identifiés. Ensuite, la rhétorique environnementale employée par Yourcenar sera étudiée afin de distinguer entre la solastalgie et des termes qui désignent des idées similaires telles que la nostalgie, le chagrin écologique et l’éco-anxiété. Der Beitrag untersucht Lwiw und Galizien als gegenwärtige Kultur- und Erinnerungslandschaft. Dabei werden Reisenarrative ab 2000 bis nach Beginn des Krieges 2014 analysiert. Dabei wird das Konzept von Galizien als Archiv verwendet, um die kontinuierliche Auseinandersetzung mit historischen Bildern während post-galizischer Reisen zu veranschaulichen. Nationale Narrative, darunter polnische, ukrainische, deutschsprachige und englischsprachige/internationale Perspektiven, tragen zu einem differenzierten Verständnis der Bedeutung von Lwiw im 21. Jahrhundert bei. Die Stadt wird folglich zu einem repräsentativen Mikrokosmos, der die komplexe Geschichte von Lwiw veranschaulicht und somit einen unverzichtbaren Bestandteil der narrativen Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Raum darstellt.

This study examines the impact of L2 translation quality and rating experience on raters’ scoring behaviors and on the reliability and variability of scores. It also investigates frequently used decision-making strategies applied by raters assigning scores to different qualities of translation papers produced by Turkish EFL students. In total, 80 translation papers (40 low-quality and 40 high-quality) obtained from the participating students were given to 10 raters to score using a translation scoring rubric. Results revealed that less experienced raters were more positive while scoring the students’ translation performances and assigned higher and more consistent scores to the papers.

L’attitude de Tokarczuk vis-à-vis du monde naturel semble avoir beaucoup en commun avec celle de Yourcenar, reconnue maintenant en tant qu’écrivaine écologiste d’avant-garde. Dans une étude comparative, je désire me concentrer sur la question de la souffrance animale, un des leitmotive de leur travail. J’aimerais approfondir ce sujet en me référant aux écrits des deux autrices, en particulier à deux romans, Sur les ossements des morts et Un homme obscur.Je propose de les étudier à la lumière de la philosophie de l’écologie profonde mais aussi en utilisant les outils de l’écopoétique.
Marguerite Yourcenar’s view of the relationship between physicality and interiority transcends the Cartesian divide and favours continuity between human and non-human. Although the reference to totemism remains timid, the woman of letters is interested in the tribe of Abenakis, and her library contains several books on totemic practices. It is also possible to glimpse a resurgence oftotemic thought in her discourse or in her relation to certain animals. The survival of totemism in Yourcenarian thought would thus sketch a new way of inhabiting the world.

This study investigated and compared differences in rendering from the same English source text into two versions of target text in Chinese produced respectively by human and machine translator represented by translator pen. Using news report as case analysis, this study found that improper segmentation of punctuation marks appeared most frequently in machine translation, followed by lexical vacancy, and by inconsistency of terms. This study also identified rendition differences between human and machine translation in the handling of terms as well as in the treatment of punctuation marks. Overall, the human translator showed more flexibility in the selection of words to match target text expression than the machine translator.

The article analyses the design and inscription of the Mediterranean in two recent historical novels that are both set at the outset of World War I. The point of departure are tropes of longing and desire, as they traditionally dominated the German discourse. The analysis attempts to illustrate the mechanisms of the literary engagements with integrative master concepts such as Fernand Braudel’s model of tiers of observation and the literary questioning of conventional configurations of time and space. The novels are understood as counter-narratives of contingency and absurdity that stage the collapse of traditional categories, as they were projected onto the Mediterranean, under the conditions of radical modernity that the historical moment engendered.
Der Aufsatz untersucht die ‚Gestaltung‘ oder (Neu-) Imprägnierung des Mittelmeerraumes in zwei neueren, am Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges spielenden historischen Romanen. Ausgangspunkt sind Tropen der Sehnsucht und des Begehrens, wie sie den deutschen Mittelmeerdiskurs lange dominierten. Die Analyse versucht die kritische literarische Auseinandersetzung dieser Romane mit integrierenden Großkonzepten wie Braudels ‚Etagen‘-Modell sowie die Infragestellung von konventionellen Raum- und Zeitkategorien im historischen Roman herauszuarbeiten. Die Romane gewinnen Kontur als Narrative von Absurdität und Kontingenz, vom Zusammenbruch überkommener Kategorien von Zeit und Raum, wie sie auch den Mittelmeerdiskurs dominieren.

A travelogue is one of the most popular literary genres in the Third Reich. It can display escapist tendencies as well as be used for ideological propaganda. This is the case in Gertrud Fussenegger‘s travelogue Böhmische Verzauberungen [Bohemian Enchantments, 1944], which legitimises the ‘Germanisation’ of Prague with reference to the ‘Reich’ idea and at the same time, based on a description of the Jewish cemetery in Prague - develops an anti-Semitic phantasmagoria. The article analyses how Fussenegger’s text uses cultural-historical descriptions of central places of memory to substantiate German hegemony.
Der Reisebericht ist eine der beliebtesten literarischen Gattungen im Dritten Reich. Er kann sowohl eskapistische Tendenzen aufweisen als auch für ideologische Propaganda genutzt werden. Dies ist der Fall in Gertrud Fusseneggers Reisebericht Böhmische Verzauberungen (1944), der die ‚Germanisierung‘ Prags durch den Verweis auf die Reichsidee legitimiert und gleichzeitig – ausgehend von einer Beschreibung des jüdischen Friedhofs in Prag – eine antisemitische Phantasmagorie entwickelt. Der Beitrag analysiert, wie Fusseneggers Text kulturgeschichtliche Beschreibungen zentraler Erinnerungsorte nutzt, um deutsche Hegemonie zu begründen.

Problem-solving is a multi-faceted activity, which lies at the very heart of the translation process and requires the effective operation of translation competence (TC). This article investigates how a group of undergraduate students who participated in a comprehensive longitudinal study into the development of TC approached three different types of prototypical translation problems before and after receiving 7.5 months of translator education. The study examines 315 problem-solving paths, focusing in particular on verbal (but also non-verbal) evidence confirming students’ awareness of the nature of the problems, the strategicness of the problem-solving process, and the plausibility of the final solutions provided.

In this paper, I contend that both HIV and AIDS must continue to be seen as crises if the pandemic is ever to be brought to an end. I start by exploring the presence of death imagery in Danez Smith’s poetry in light of Marianne Hirsch (2008) and Samuel O’Donoghue’s (2018) reflections on postmemory, arguing that AIDS haunts the experience of HIV in Smith’s work in the form of postmemory. Based on this idea, I engage with the ongoing debate about the "post-crisis era" (Kagan, 2018; Rofes, 1998), and critical “post-AIDS discourse” (Basu et al.,2022; Walker, 2020) to claim that postmemory constitutes one of the multiple expressions of the “network of crises” which AIDS and HIV continue to be in the 21st century (Cheng et al., 2020).
