The Room as an Interpretation of the Wertheric Hero

Abstract

The Wertherian hero is a character created by Johann Wolfgang Goethe in his 1774 novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. Thus, the young artist inspired subsequent artists, to create the figure of the romantic hero, and encouraged the expression of feelings through art. The purpose of this article is to show that the Wertherian hero, despite the passage of decades, is still evident in contemporary art. To this end, the author discusses the characteristics of the aforementioned hero, and then analyzes the main character of Tommy Wiseau’s 2003 film The Room.
