Professor at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, dr habil. of law, specialist in criminal procedure. Since 1 October 1976, he has worked as a research and teaching staff member at the Department of Criminal Procedure. The core object of research by Professor Ireneusz Nowikowski covers the matters concerning procedural acts taken in criminal proceedings. These issues were addressed in his doctoral thesis titled Terminy w procesie karnym [Time Limits in Criminal Procedure] (Lublin 1984) which was awarded a third-tier prize by the journal "Państwo i Prawo". The monograph Terminy w kodeksie postępowania karnego [Time Limits in the Criminal Procedure Code] (Lublin 1984) written based on this dissertation was awarded a third-tier prize by the Minister of Science and Higher Education. The issues of acts in criminal procedure were also discussed in the habilitation dissertation Odwołalność czynności procesowych stron w polskim procesie karnym [Revocability of Procedural Acts of the Parties in Polish Criminal Procedure] (Lublin 2001), awarded a second-tier prize by the journal "Państwo i Prawo". On 7 November 2001, professor Nowikowski was granted the degree of habilitated doctor (doktor habilitowany) in law, criminal procedure. He is also the author of several dozen publications on the rights of participants to criminal proceedings, on special procedures, selected principles of criminal procedure and the issues regarding precedents in the case law of the Penal Chamber of the Polish Supreme Court. He was a visiting scholar at the Institute of Penal Law of the University of Warsaw (in 1980 and 1990) and at the Institute of Penal Law of the University of Bonn (1992).
