The film Amelia as an Expression of Longing for Old Paris

Anna Surma

Abstract

Amelie is a 2001 film by Jean Pierre Jeunet, shot mainly in France. It tells the story of a young waitress who dreams of true love. After finding a small box of toys in her bathroom, she decides to do good deeds for people. During these events, Amelia finds the love of her life. The film is both a tribute to French culture and nostalgically captures the atmosphere of Paris. It shows the city as calm and harmonious, like from a fairy tale. It also tells the story of Amelia’s difficult childhood, which had an impact on her adult life, making her feel lonely and closed off. Yan Tiersen’s music fits perfectly into the narrative, giving the film a unique atmosphere. Amelia is a story about strength, friendship and love that can overcome the difficulties of life. Jeunet wants to show France in a positive light, promoting originality and valuing the nostalgic image of Paris. The film is also an expression of the director’s longing for his home country, the Paris of his youth.
