Konstantin Mutafov’s Language Anxieties – a Bulgarian Intellectual in the Beginning of the 20th Century

Abstract

The report reveals key stances of Bulgarian writer Konstantin Mutafov (1879–1946), who worked actively during the first decades of the 20th century, regarding the purity of the spoken and written literary language in the context of various polemics about its development and codification through a sequence of language reforms. Today, at the beginning of the 21^st century, the language again needs a similar considerate approach, care and protection in the name of the assertion of the national identity in the modern complicated conditions of language communication.
