Focus and Scope
Zeszyty Cyrylo-Metodiańskie (Cyrillo-Methodian Papers) is an annual academic journal published by the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin. The journal is dedicated to promoting up-to-date research in language, literature and culture in the fields of Slavic and Balkan studies. Its long-term ambition is to provide a platform for scholarly debates and the popularization of the widely understood Cyrillo-Methodian heritage, foreign Bulgarian studies and the Polish-Bulgarian cultural dialogue. The Editorial team welcomes scholarly or polemical articles and reviews written in English or all Slavic languages.
The journal was established in 2012 as an outcome of annual international conferences in Slavistics held in Lublin and the town of Biała Podlaska. As a result of the Cyril and Methodius in the Language and Culture of Slavs conference series several collective volumes were published. The newly formed Editorial team, initially consisting of members of the UMCS Department of Slavic Linguistics, accepted the challenge of switching from collective volumes to an open access academic journal as a major task for editors in the field of Slavic studies.
The Editorial team recognizes the constant community need for a high-quality platform for foreign Bulgarian studies. From the beginning we adopted a diamond open access philosophy based on the concept of freely available research and global exchange of expertise. This is in full accordance with our aim of reaching a wide international audience.
Due to its non-commercial nature the journal relies heavily on building a strong community of readers, authors and reviewers. Advertising, financing and donations are considered options, however they do not affect the journal’s aims and policies. We believe that research findings in humanities should be open and free of charge with contributors able to share their analyses and expertise without any national, racial, gender, religious, worldview or language restrictions.
Although we are striving to be a niche journal, we share the conviction that wider comparative research in Slavic and Balkan studies is an invaluable part of today’s scholarly activities in the humanities. This is why the Editorial team has always been open to new approaches towards the field subjects, as well as to independent views of foreign academics on separate national traditions.
The official title of the journal is Zeszyty Cyrylo-Metodiańskie with the form Cyrillo-Methodian Papers also in use. The title does not suggest exclusive focus on Cyrillo-Methodian studies or paleoslavistics; it refers to the brother saints as patrons of the Slavic world and co-patrons of Europe.

Peer Review Process
The journal is peer reviewed. Each paper submitted for publishing should receive two positive reviews by reviewers who are unfamiliar with the author’s identity. Likewise, the author does not know the identity of the reviewers.
The Review Process step by step
Authors submit their manuscripts via the journal’s online platform or electronically via email to rikev@umcs.pl. Each manuscript is firstly scrutinized by the Editorial team for its formal and substantive qualities (compliance with the journal’s values, Author Guidelines and thematic scope). The Editorial team may decide to reject the manuscript before further reviewing.The second step of the publication process is identifying suitable reviewers and inviting two experts in the corresponding field for a blind peer-review with no known conflict of interests between the author and the reviewer. If a potential reviewer rejects the proposition to evaluate a manuscript, further invitations are sent until the Editors receive two acceptances for reviewing the text. Potential reviewers do not obtain any details on the author’s identity and affiliations.
Potential reviewers consider the invitation against their own expertise and availability. They then accept or decline to review the manuscript. It is possible for a reviewer to suggest another (more suitable) reviewer, or to signal the need for further reviewing of the manuscript.
Each reviewer sets time to read and review the manuscript. When needed, the reviewer may present their notes and arguments for a point-by-point review. Finally, the review is submitted to the journal with a clear recommendation to accept, reject or improve the manuscript through major or minor revisions.
Members of the Editorial board and Editorial team are not excluded from the list of potential authors. In case a board or team member submits an article, he/she is automatically excluded from the process of editing and evaluating the manuscript. The task of evaluation and communication with reviewers is performed by the editor in chief and the deputy editor.
In case the editor in chief submits a manuscript for the journal, the evaluation process falls into the responsibility of the deputy editor with the help of the members of the Editorial team, and vice versa. At no point before the publication of the journal issue should the author be familiar with the identity of his/her manuscript reviewers.
Before making their overall decision on the submitted manuscript, the Editorial team considers all the returned reviews and may further discuss their arguments. If the reviews differ widely, the team may invite a third reviewer with a view to obtaining an additional opinion before making its final decision.
On completion of the reviewing process, the Editorial team sends the decision via email to the author. The email contains any relevant comments and suggestions made by the reviewers or/and Editorial team members. The Editorial team’s decision is final.
After accepting a manuscript for publication, editors (from the Editorial team or invited additional specialists) are responsible for the final preparation of the text, including spell-checking, grammar-checking, minor stylistic corrections, the formatting of all manuscript elements (including graphics, tables, etc.). The Editorial team member processing the text is also responsible for blinding all elements that may potentially reveal the author’s identity (e.g. the author’s name and affiliations, self-references, author data in figures or metadata) before sending the manuscript to reviewers.
Publication Frequency
Cyrillo-Methodian Papers is an annual journal. The deadline concerning article admissions is the 31st of May. Planned publication of each journal is at the end of every calendar year. Up to 2023, all journal issues have been published without delay.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
Users are allowed to read, download, copy, print,distribute, or link to the full texts of the journal’s articles without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author.
The journal does not charge authors any fees for submitting, reviewing, processing and publishing their manuscripts.
How We Operate
The editor-in-chief acts as the face of the journal. He is responsible for determining and maintaining the scope, policies and tone of the journal. He is setting and heading the Editorial team and has the last say on discussions concerning submitted and reviewed manuscripts.
The deputy editor is responsible for the day-to-day running of the journal. He is supervising the implementation of all policies and guidelines confirmed by the editor-in-chief, ensures quick and effective correspondence with authors, reviewers and editors. He also acts as the managing editor of the journal issues.
The members of the Editorial team constitute the governing body of the journal. Editors engage in the implementation of the journal’s policies and provide expert opinion during all stages of the publishing process. All editor assignments are distributed by the editor-in-chief.
Editorial board members:
- are selected by the journal’s co-editors
- serve as promoters of the journal and attract potential authors, reviewers and readers
- provide strategic advice to the Editorial team in relation to the journal aim and scope
- support the ethics policy of the journal by monitoring its implementation
- may act as peer-reviewers, should they be approached by the editor-in-chief to review a particular paper
- may submit their own work for publishing in the journal. In such cases board members have no knowledge or influence on the review process of their submitted work

Publication Ethics
Cyrillo-Methodian Papers encourage original research and intellectual honesty. Submitted papers should formulate and possibly try to answer important academic questions, rather than reveal collected data.
The journal is committed to meeting high standards of ethical behaviour at all stages of the publication process. Our leading principles are:
- honesty in all aspects of research and academic discussions;
- thoroughness and scrupulous care in preparing a text for submission;
- transparency of presented thoughts and research, including methods applied, collected data, hypotheses and theories;
- respect and open communication with representatives and readers of the journal.
The journal aims to follow the core practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). We also consider the guidelines in Elsevier’s Publishing Ethics Resource Kit (PERK) for editors. Cases of possible misconduct are treated following the COPE flowcharts.
Please read carefully our full Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement (Version 3.0)
