Память о о царице Клеопатре в американском кино

Kinga Panasiuk-Garbacz

Abstract

The aim of the article is to draw attention to one of the forgotten American movies. Cleopatra directed by Gordon Edwards in 1917 influenced the creation of other film images of the Egyptian queen and her portrait in contemporary pop culture. The directors have been fascinated by the femme fatale type of character and the feminine psyche since the silent movies. To emphasize the mysteriousness of the heroine, a dark biography was invented for the actress and her name was changed. Film roles influenced the real life of the actress and caused the reaction of the viewers, which resulted in the increase of the popularity of the movie. Cleopatra was a remarkable production, and its originality was very controversial.
