Email this article Changes in the Semantics of Selected Names of Regions and Their Inhabitants. The Case of Podhale and góral (highlander) in Surveys of 1990–2020
Abstract
The purpose of the study is to outline the changes that have occurred in the conceptualisation of selected names of regions and their inhabitants in contemporary Polish. Podhale is a historically, culturally, and economically important region of Poland, while its inhabitants are people who are often perceived through the prism of stereotypical characteristics attributed to highlanders (pol. górale). The data for the study come from students surveys of 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020 (abbreviated as ASA 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020). The results reveal that over the past four decades, Podhale has invariably been viewed through the prism of location (geography), cultural characteristics (a dialect of Polish, traditions, customs), and conditions of life (high production capacity, a developed industry, agriculture). On the other hand, the image of the region’s inhabitants is dominated by three sets of characteristics. The first are cultural aspects: language, tradition, customs, folklore, singing. The second set contains characteristics relating to work and lifestyle. The third set relates to mentality and personal traits: sincerity, pride, stubbornness. Physical characteristics of the Podhale people (górale), such as strength, vigor, posture, or agility, also play a significant role. Psychosocial traits, such as hospitality, wisdom, openness, friendliness, kindness, or the love of the mountains, are basically stereotypical, culturally entrenched, and belong to a broad socially shared image of the people. Interestingly, the image of Podhale and highlanders is predominantly positive, with limited negative aspects (mainly to be found in the psychosocial sphere).
