The Serbian Cultural Concept Домовина (Homeland) and Its Relationship in the Conceptual Sphere with Држава (State) and Народ (Nation/People)

Abstract


This study presents the holistic picture of the Serbian cultural concept domovina / otaЏbina (homeland) within the conceptual space that it shares with država (state) and народ (nation/people). In order to analyse the structure, characteristics, and values of that concept, as well as its links with related concepts, the methodology of Lublin Ethnolinguistic School was used, with its tripartite focus on the data from the language system, texts, and questionnaires. It appears that the cultural concept domovina is dynamic: it undergoes historical, social, and cultural transformations but is nevertheless strictly connected with the felling of belonging and collective identity. Finally, a cognitive definition of the cultural concept domovina is proposed.
