Social Network Facebook as a vehicle for promoting libraries

Abstract


Facebook is a place which connects users from all over the world, enables exchange of information involving their own lives. Furthermore, this is a perfect, free way for promoting companies, organizations and individuals. For these purposes there are created fan sites so-called fanpages. The main purpose of this article is discussing a topic related to hosting such accounts by cultural institutions which are the libraries. The attention was paid to what is publish on them, what is the frequency of occurrence and how do the libraries open up to its reader. The question is, how do these libraries try to cajole people into using offered services by organizing online competitions and doing various kinds of surveys? Using applications and features for example direct access to online library’s catalog were analysed. To this end, various types of libraries accounts were viewed: academic libraries, public, scholastic, special and even digital. They were restricted only to polish libraries. The article was trying to answer the following questions: Do the libraries use this form of promotion capably? and Does reinforcing the bond between a reader and an institution really bring positive results and does it win over new users?
