Josephine J. Mehlberg. Philosopher – Humanitarian – Mathematician
Abstract
The paper describes the life and work of Pepi Spinner, Janina Suchodolska, and Josephine Mehlberg. Alongside multiple other findings, the article confirms the earlier identification of the three persons as one and the same woman. Pepi Spinner was Kazimierz Twardowski’s student and collaborator. Janina Suchodolska, as a spurious countess, worked during WWII in the structures of the Main Welfare Council and brought help to the prisoners of the Nazi Camp at Majdanek and shortly after WWII was active in Polish and international humanitarian organizations. And Josephine Mehlberg was Henryk Mehlberg’s wife and a professor of mathematics at Illinois Institute of Technology. Generally, the paper contributes to the history of philosophy and mathematics in pre-war Lviv, and to the history of the resistance during WWII, giving an example of people of Jewish origin who, for altruistic reasons, risked death helping Poles.
