National issues in the “Belarus” weekly (1913–1915)
Abstract
The paper presents the national issues discussed in the Belarusian-language weekly “Belarus”,
published using a Roman typeface, from 13 January 1913 to 30 June 1915, and addressed
primarily to Catholics. The authors who published in the weekly familiarized the readers inter
alia with basic concepts associated with the nation-making process. They tried to explain clearly
to poorly educated peasants why they should regard themselves as Belarusians. The “Belarus”
weekly contributed to the formation of the Belarusian movement, which was evidenced for example
by the letters coming to its editorial office.
