Focus and Scope

The journal Etnolingwistyka. Problemy Języka i Kultury / Ethnolinguistics. Issues in Language and Culture welcomes submissions concerning the study of language in its relationship to culture. A broad understanding of ethnolinguistics is assumed, as anthropological or cultural linguistics, with a possible cognitivist aspect. Submissions can address the study of language in all its variants and varieties (dialects, socioliects, standard varieties), as long as they address its relationship to culture and/or society. Both theoretical or analytical studies are welcome. The former can address issues of language as such, the latter can be concerned with a specific language (or languaculture) or have a comparative dimension. The journal publishes original research articles, review articles, reviews, book notices on recent publications, as well as reports on conferences, seminars, and other events. Preferable languages of submissions: Polish, English, and Russian. Authors can be active researchers affiliated with academic institutions, freelance researchers, or doctoral students. All submissions must agree with the journal profile.

Peer Review Process

Submissions to the journal undergo a two-stage review process. First, submissions are evaluated by the members of the Team of Editors or the Editorial Board: the choice of the internal reviewers depends on the theme of the publication and the language of the submission (native speakers or specialists in a given language are selected). The identity of the reviewers is not revealed to the authors. Second, submissions accepted in the first stage undergo a double-blind peer-review process by two external reviewers, experts in the respective fields not affiliated with the same institution as the submission’s author. External reviews are produced in writing and end with a recommendation as to the acceptance/rejection of the submission: (i) publish as is; (ii) publish after editorial corrections (minor revision); (iii) publish after revision of content; (iv) reject/resubmit after a major revision (not acceptable for publication in current form).

Publication Frequency

The journal Etnolingwistyka. Problemy języka i kultury is published once a year (in the electronic version). Submissions are accepted and evaluated on a continuous basis. The internal review process (preliminary assessment) takes on average 14 days. Submissions qualified for further processing are sent to external reviewers – the external review process takes, on average, 60 days. Depending on the recommendations of the reviewers, the manuscripts are: (1) rejected (with two negative reviews), (2) returned to authors for revision (following the reviewers’ recommendations), (3) sent to a third, additional reviewer (in the case of contradictory reviews), or (4) qualified for publication (with two positive reviews). Articles accepted for publication and edited in accordance with the journal requirements are published in the next issue of the journal (the average waiting time for publication is 200 days). The final decision, however, also depends on the theme of specific issues.

Ethnolinguistics. Issues in Language and Culture Ethical principles

General ethical standards

The journal’s Editorial Board follows The Rules of Good Practice in Scholarship (Kodeks dobrych obyczajów w nauce), the ethical principles formulated by the Committee for the Ethics of the Word within the Council for the Polish Language, and the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE, www.publicationethics.org).

The material submitted for publication (henceforth: submission) is accepted and published exclusively for its merit, regardless of the authors’ gender, religion, race, social background, or political views.

Editorial Code of Conduct

In making decisions, the Editorial Board are guided by the submissions’ scholarly merit, originality of approach, clarity, and compatibility with the journal’s profile (cultural linguistics in a broad sense).

The Editorial Board perform a preliminary assessment of submissions (for their compatibility with the journal’s profile, preliminary assessment of their scholarly merit), select and contact the Reviewers, and make final decisions as to the acceptance of submissions for publication.

Members of the Editorial Board are obliged to act by the rules of:

  • maintenance of scholarly standards (the material published in the journal must be characterised by the highest possible level of content and form; submissions that violate the principles of ethics or good conduct are rejected);
  • confidentiality and neutralisation of the conflict of interest (the content of the submissions is not revealed to third parties; the content of unpublished submissions is not used in works authored by Editorial Board members).

The same standards are expected of all individuals involved in the publication process.

Members of the Editorial Board monitor the maintenance of standards and rules of good practice throughout the publication process, as well as counteracting violations of those standards and rules by Authors or Reviewers. They document all manifestations of scholarly unconscientiousness and unreliability, in particular the so called ghostwriting (the practice of contributing, in essential manner, to the material being submitted without being mentioned as the (co-)author of the submission or in the acknowledgments) and guest authorship (the practice of mentioning individuals as (co-)authors without those individuals contributing to the material submitted in ways that would sanction such mention).

Should the Editorial Board identify instances of scholarly misconduct, they make it known to the Author’s home institution, scholarly associations, and publishing houses.

Author Code of Conduct

The Authors can only submit work that is original, conscientiously produced, and objective. It must also be compatible with the journal’s profile (in special cases, with the theme of a planned special issue, information on which is announced on the journal’s website twelve months in advance of the planned publication).

Work that has been published elsewhere is not accepted for publication.

In the case of co-authored submissions, the contribution of each Author must be specified: the affiliation, the proportion of the contribution (in %), as well as the nature of the contribution (the general conception, major assumptions, methodological framework, etc.). Responsibility in this respect rests with the submitting Author.

Authors are obliged to reference publications they have used in producing their work. The practice of excessive and superfluous self-citation or “arranged” citation of other authors is stigmatised.

If the submission is a result of the work of a research team or if it has been financed by research centres, associations, or other institutions, the appropriate information must be provided in a preliminary footnote on the submission’s first page. Responsibility in this respect rests with the submitting Author.

No form of plagiarism is tolerated. Instances of the practice are made known and the appropriate institutions are notified.

Reviewer Code of Conduct

Members of the Editorial Board select independent Reviewers unassociated with the Author(s) though personal connections, institutional structure, or joint research within the period of two years prior to the reviewing process.

The Reviewers must maintain the standards of:

  • objectivity (the assessment of the submission must be factual and objective);
  • conscientiousness (the Reviewer (i) should propose corrections to the submission that would improve its quality; (ii) should point out similarities between the submission and other works; (iii) must not use the content of the submission for their own purposes prior to publication);
  • confidentiality (submissions must not be made available to third parties prior to publication).

In the case of conflict of interests, the Reviewer should decline the request to review and notify the Editorial Board without delay.
