Focus and Scope

The mission of East of Europe. Humanities and Social Studies is to promote and disseminate interdisciplinary research on Central and Eastern Europe as a region undergoing dynamic political, social, historical, cultural, economic, and civilizational transformations. The journal provides an international forum for scholarly debate, bringing together researchers from Poland and abroad and fostering the exchange of knowledge, experience, and research findings across a broad range of academic disciplines. A particular objective of the journal is to enhance the international visibility of research on Central and Eastern Europe, with special emphasis on the achievements of Polish scholarship and its contribution to the development of East European Studies.

Building on the legacy of the European College of Polish and Ukrainian Universities — a unique academic initiative established to strengthen scholarly cooperation among universities in Central and Eastern Europe, whose publishing activities included the Yearbook of the European College of Polish and Ukrainian Universities (2002–2010) — the journal continues the tradition of serving as an international platform for academic exchange. Drawing on this heritage, it promotes collaboration between academic institutions in Poland and abroad, supports interdisciplinary research on the region, and encourages scholarly debate founded on high academic standards, methodological openness, and international cooperation.

The journal publishes original empirical and theoretical research, comparative analyses, review articles, case studies, source materials, book reviews, and academic reports. The Editorial Board welcomes submissions employing diverse theoretical and methodological approaches, particularly those resulting from international cooperation and national or international research projects.

The journal particularly welcomes contributions addressing:

  • political systems, public life, democratization, and political transformation in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe;
  • international relations, foreign policy, and regional and international cooperation;
  • international, national, societal, information, and cultural security;
  • the political and social history of the region and its contemporary interpretations;
  • memory politics, collective memory, cultural heritage, and historical policy;
  • political thought, political ideas, ideologies, and transformations of political identities;
  • political communication, media, propaganda, disinformation, and information security;
  • civil society, social movements, political parties, and political elites;
  • relations between the state, society, culture, and religion;
  • nation-building processes and national, ethnic, and regional identities;
  • migration, cross-border cooperation, and social and demographic change;
  • the geopolitical, social, and cultural dimensions of contemporary developments in Central and Eastern Europe.

The interdisciplinary profile of the journal encompasses research in political science and public administration, international relations, security studies, media and communication studies, history, sociology, cultural and religious studies, and other disciplines that contribute to a deeper understanding of Central and Eastern Europe.

Committed to maintaining the highest academic, ethical, and publishing standards, the Editorial Board supports the advancement of research on Central and Eastern Europe and the development of an international network of scholarly cooperation that fosters a deeper understanding of the region and its ongoing political, social, economic, and cultural transformations. In pursuing this mission, the Editorial Board is supported by the Scientific Board, composed of distinguished scholars from Polish and international academic institutions. The Scientific Board performs an advisory role, supporting the journal's academic development, internationalization, and commitment to the highest standards of scholarly publishing.

Peer Review Process

All manuscripts submitted to East of Europe. Humanities and Social Studies undergo an independent scientific evaluation conducted in accordance with the double-blind peer review principle. The purpose of the peer review process is to ensure the scholarly quality of published articles and to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity, impartiality, and transparency in the editorial process.

The peer review procedure is based on the following principles:

  • each submitted manuscript undergoes an initial editorial assessment to verify its compliance with the journal's scope, formal requirements, and publication ethics;
  • all submissions are evaluated for originality, scholarly integrity, and compliance with the journal's publication ethics policy;
  • each manuscript is reviewed by at least two independent reviewers who are experts in the relevant field and are not affiliated with the same institution as the author(s);
  • the review process follows the double-blind peer review model, whereby the identities of both authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the entire review process;
  • reviewers are required to maintain confidentiality and disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest;
  • the final editorial decision to accept, request revisions to, or reject a manuscript is made by the Editorial Board on the basis of the reviewers' reports.

The identities of reviewers assigned to individual manuscripts remain confidential. At the end of each publication year, the Editorial Board publishes an annual list of reviewers who have cooperated with the journal.

The Editorial Board is committed to ensuring that the peer review process is conducted efficiently, in a timely manner, and in accordance with the highest standards of scholarly quality and publication ethics.
