The Christology of Liberatus of Carthage (Relationship to Neo-Chalcedonism)
Abstract
Liberatus – archdeacon of the Carthaginian Church lived in the 6th century through the intensification of Christological controversies during the reign of Emperor Justinian and the theological dominance of neo-Chalcedonism in Constantinople and other centers of the empire. In his only known contemporary work, Breviarium, he attempted to defend the so-called „Three Chapters”, condemned by the imperial edict and the decision of the Second Council of Constantinople, showing the issue of their orthodoxy against the background of the development of radical Christological movements: nestorianism and eutychanism. The following article analyzes the work of the African priest in terms of his Christology, focusing on his attitude to neo-Chalcedonism, through the prism of the reception of Cyrillic Christology, the figures of Antiochian theologians from the 5th century and the theopaschite formula.
