„Nasza osobliwa instytucja” – problem niewolnictwa w myśli politycznej Johna Caldwella Calhouna

John C. Calhoun był amerykańskim mężem stanu, teoretykiem politycznym, senatorem, sekretarzem wojny i siódmym wiceprezydentem Stanów Zjednoczonych w latach 1825–1832. Rozpoczął swoją karierę polityczną jako nacjonalista, modernizator, zwolennik silnego rządu federalnego i taryf ochronnych. Później stał się przywódcą Południa i głównym zwolennikiem praw stanowych, ograniczonego rządu i nullifikacji. Podczas swojej kariery politycznej bronił niewolnictwa jako części południowej struktury społecznej i podstawy gospodarki rolnej. Podczas gdy inni politycy z Południa usprawiedliwiali niewolnictwo jako „zło konieczne”, Calhoun, w swoim słynnym przemówieniu w Senacie w 1837 r., stwierdził, że niewolnictwo było „pozytywnym dobrem”. W artykule autor bada podstawy tej postawy Calhouna.
