Assistance to Ukrainian Children Internally Displaced During the Second Wave of Migration in Ukraine

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the original results of a study conducted among primary school principals and local government representatives from the Lviv region in Ukraine. Considering that the war in Ukraine has been going on for over three years, there have been no studies to date assessing the assistance provided to children displaced in the second wave of migration. It is very important to learn about the measures implemented by school principals and local governments in western Ukraine in connection with the admission of children from occupied and displaced areas, as the war is generating many changes in the Ukrainian education system and in the priorities of local government tasks. The study used a diagnostic survey method and two original questionnaires, one addressed to primary school principals and the other to local government representatives from the Lviv region. The study covered a group of 20 primary school principals and eight local government representatives. The research was conducted in 2024 in accordance with ethical principles and with the informed consent of the respondents. The analysis of the results of the research allowed us to learn about the activities of the principals and local government and to determine their algorithm and the need to obtain funds from various sources, especially from foreign aid. Schools demonstrated their ability to adapt in planning the educational process under martial law. The experience gained by Ukrainian local governments and schools during the war can be useful to other countries where armed conflicts arise.
